Farmingdale STEP Field TripOn Tuesday, August 15, 2017, Farmingdale State College's Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) went on a field trip to the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center (MESC). STEP offers academic services and onsite experience for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in science and technology and are local to Farmingdale. The students are allowed to choose two different subjects during the STEP summer program―these students expressed interest in marine life, traveling to the MESC for marine science week. Previous weeks' subjects included chemistry labs, drone piloting, and more.
The students split up into two groups led by marine educators Stephanie Rekemeyer, David Chase, and Pete Macchia, and got to experience the full package of CSLI's marine education programs. The day began with catching and releasing marine organisms in seine nets, followed by visiting the Shellfish Hatchery where students observed muscle dissection and helped to sort oysters. The afternoon consisted of lunch overlooking the beach, exploring the MESC touch tanks, observing and identifying plankton with microscopes, watching an educational video on Mount Sinai's coastal geography, and some free time to view the MESC fish tanks and play with its many touch-screen games. The STEP students were eager to learn, quick to answer questions, and were great guests to have here in Mount Sinai.
