The Great Brookhaven CleanupOn Saturday, May 20, 2017 The Great Brookhaven Cleanup celebrated ten years of clean beaches, reminding our volunteers to make every day Earth Day!
The day began with a cleanup of the harbor side of Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, where our volunteers were later greeted by Fabien Cousteau who assisted us with the cleanup. After touring the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center with Town of Brookhaven counselwoman Jane Bonner, Fabien gave a talk about ocean conservation efforts: reminding us that cleaning our beaches not only improves our environment and the world, but it portrays a positive message and sets an example for others to follow. He spoke of the importance of stopping pollution at its source and bridging the gap between land and sea through caring for the beach, emphasizing that in the words of his grandfather, "Only the impossible missions succeed." About Fabien Cousteau
|
Fabien Cousteau is the grandson of renowned oceanographer, innovator, and conservationist Jacques Cousteau, whose achievements include co-developing the Aqua-lung and creating more than 120 television documentaries. Fabien Cousteau has carried on his grandfather’s legacy as an aquanaut, oceanographic explorer, documentary filmmaker, and environmental advocate. He has been scuba diving since age four, was featured on National Geographic as an Explorer-at-Large, and is best known for studying and immersing himself in the world of sharks. As of recent years, Fabien spends much of his time working with local communities and children worldwide to help restore local water ecosystems as a member of multiple cause-driven and charitable boards.

The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center
The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center was founded in 2016 as a 501(c)(3). They focus on Public Awareness (SEE), Education (LEARN) and Special Projects (DO). Some of these activities and initiatives include: coral reef restoration programs, sea turtles restoration programs, and educational resources that can be utilized for elementary grades to the university level, as well museum programming. These components will allow us to empower communities and children to help restore local water ecosystems through the healthy “replanting” of key marine species and empower future stewards of ocean conservation. |
