Please Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ALL scheduled activities for the time being are suspended, with the exception of our Shellfish Restoration Program. We STRONGLY encourage interested participants to contact our activity captain, Bruce Folz, in advance of attending at the phone number listed below.
As soon as we have received the necessary approvals from the various municipalities involved, we hope to be able to resume some of our cleanups through the summer and into the fall. In the meantime, we intend to make every effort to keep our many volunteers and supporters up to date through regular newsletters and emails.
On behalf of CSLI President Denis Mellett and the Coastal Steward Long Island board of directors, thank you for your interest, and we look forward to hosting each and every one of you at an upcoming event!

On October 17th 2020, Coastal Steward LI was visited by Councilwoman Jane Bonner at the Town of Brookhaven Mariculture facility in Mt. Sinai. She came to see and work with their Shellfish Restoration Program team. On that day, Coastal Steward LI was beginning to load half of the oyster population onto their boat to begin releasing the shellfish into Port Jefferson harbor.
This summer Coastal Steward LI raised an estimated 80,000 oysters averaging in 52.28 cm in size. Councilwoman Bonner was amazed to see the quantity of oysters we had this summer and just how large they had grown. Throughout the years she has shown continuous support for Coastal Steward LI by contributing a helping hand in our education, preservation, and restoration missions. With her and Coastal Steward LI close partnership with the Town of Brookhaven, we are able to keep our waters clean and preserve our harbors. Visit the article linked : https://www.brookhavenny.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2514&ARC=3270 to read more about Councilwoman Bonner’s visit to Mt. Sinai harbor. |

On Sunday, September 20, the Coastal Steward Long Island will be joining the rest of the world by participating in the International Coastal Cleanup.
The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. The movement was catalyzed by the passion and spirit of two committed individuals, Linda Maraniss and Kathy O’Hara. The Cleanup has grown immensely in the 30 years since Linda and Kathy’s first Cleanup. Volunteers from states and territories throughout the U.S. and more than 100 countries come together each year and participate in a Cleanup event near them. Thanks to volunteers around the world, the International Coastal Cleanup has become a beacon of hope, leading and inspiring action in support of our oceans. Please join us on this day to do our part for this important event. Gloves, bags, and pickup sticks will be provided along with water and snacks.
Directions: Take RT112 North through Port Jefferson Village to North Broadway. (The end of 112). Make a right onto N. Broadway and drive up the hill. Make a left onto Cliff Road through the entrance to Belle Terre Village. Go almost to the end of Cliff road and Anchorage Road will be on the left. Meet in the cul-de-sac on Anchorage Road. **Port Jefferson guidelines are all volunteers must be wearing a mask! All volunteers must be actively cleaning the beach for community service credit.
