Celebrating I Love My Park Day All Over Long Island
Coastal Steward Plants Dune Grass at Orient Point Park
Coastal Steward Long Island ventured to Orient Point Park on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 in support of New York State's I Love My Park Day. Our members helped plant dune grass that is vital in stabling the erosion issues on our beaches. In conjunction with volunteers from the area and Parks Department employees, we were able to plant approximately 2,000 square feet on dune with grass where there was none previously. Great job by all! |
Coastal Steward Prepares Pollinator Garden at Fire Island National Seashore (FINS)
Also in support of I Love My Park Day, our members helped prepare a pollinator garden for the upcoming season on Fire Island. The garden is an attraction for many visitors that pass through this busy tourist center, along with many bird and insect species. The FINS Garden is a registered Monarch Flyway for monarch butterflies. The garden's native milkweeds provide nourishment to multiple generations of monarchs, allowing for their incredible migration up and down the Americas. The park rangers were very pleased with our efforts and hope we can arrange to get some more volunteers to the garden for planting and continued maintenance of the garden. Please contact us if you are interested in joining us in the future. |
